WHAT DOES THEYYAM REPRESENT?
In this edition of the ‘Festival Flow’ series, we bring you an ancient ritualistic art form called Theyyam from India’s southernmost state of Kerala. Shot by Akmal Nazeer at Mundayad, Kannur – Theyyam is a famous ritual art form which encompasses dance, mime and music. It exalts the beliefs of the ancient tribes who gave a lot of importance to the worship of heroes and the spirits of their ancestors. The ceremonious dance is accompanied by the chorus of such musical instruments as Chenda, Elathalam, Kurumkuzal and Veekkuchenda. It is believed that this tradition is thousands of years old and from a time when tribal animalism was the most common form of worship. During the Theyyam season, small temples and shrines all across Kerala practice the ritual in the midst of temple priests and looming crowds. It is incredible to note that there are almost 400 different kinds of Theyyam.

OF THE FLOW
The history of Theyyam – the thousand year old ritual form of dance worship.

Kandanar Kelan

Theyyam

This film depicts the character Kandanar Kelan, who is believed to have set off a fire in drunken stupor and climbed a tree inhabited by a snake. As the tale goes, the fire engulfed the tree before long and both Kelan and the snake perish. The next day, however, under fortuitous circumstances, Kelan goes through a rebirth. This film introduces the intense character of Kandanar Kelan and the traditional act of running through the fire in a specific type of Theyyam found in North Malabar region.

ORIGINALS

This series explores the biggest festivals from around the globe, each standing for its unique belief and emotion that immerses one in a state of flow. For the pilot of the series we were invited to the Magnetic Fields festival, for the second episode “Kelan - A Trial by Fire,” we collaborated with a young filmmaker Akmal Nazeer, who we then commissioned for the third episode to capture the mourning of Muharram in Kargil.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
